How to look up words in a paper book with your iPhone

Take a picture of the text.

Take a picture of a book page or printed text.

Keep the page flat and the text in focus, with enough light to read it clearly. Include the sentence around the unfamiliar word: Omato can use surrounding text to help explain its meaning in context.

Tap a word in the digital text.

Omato turns your photo into selectable text. Tap a word and confirm to look it up.

Check that the selected word matches the printed page before confirming. If the photograph is blurry or letters are missing, take another photo before looking it up.

A definition that meets you where you are.

Dictionary definition: The meaning is explained in the same language as the word.

Translated definition: The meaning is explained in your chosen translation language.

In the example below, “obliquely” is an English adverb meaning indirectly or in a deliberately vague way. Dictionary mode explains it in English, with pronunciation, an example sentence and synonyms. Translation mode explains the meaning in your chosen language instead.
